Commerce of the Prairies
Published in Hardcover by Peter Smith Publisher, Incorporated (01 July, 1983)
Average review score:

Historical Masterpiece of the SouthwestIn 1831, on a suggestion from his doctor to travel west to improve his health, Josiah Gregg joined a wagon train of Sante Fe traders. The result is a highly acclaimed first hand narrative of the Sante Fe trade and life on the prairies during the 1830's. Gregg's vivid writing style illustrates the many hardships and adventures of life along the Sante Fe Trail and into Mexico. We read about traveling through barren deserts, inconsistencies of the weather, the always present danger of marauding Indians and Mexicans, the questionable Mexican governmental policies, etc. Being an amateur naturalist (he had several species of plants named after him), Gregg describes geographical landforms, geology, and plant and animal life extremely well. He also gives clear, precise and realistic descriptions of the cultures and customs of both the Indians and native Mexicans from how they dressed, to how they constructed their homes; religious, spiritual and matrimonial beliefs; how food was secured and prepared; theories on future agricultural practices and uses, etc. Gregg was a keen and acute observer of his immediate surroundings which is evident in both his writing style and presentation of the subject. Professor Moorhead's editing is second to none.
Primary Source, in depth, discussion of the southern plainsShortly after Mexican Independence interest in establishing trade with Sante Fe, Mexico's most northerly province, became ever more popular. Josiah Gregg was preceded by Mountain Men who explored the area, but he was the first with sufficient education to describe the people, land features and Indians with whom traders would have to deal. His work constitues a PREFACE to other books dealing with the Santa Fe Trail and its growing interest to the United States. Independence, MO, and Fort Smith and Van Buren, AR. - were the northern and southern starting points for Santa Fe respectively. The book is as much a tale of encounters as it is a repository of valuable information. A 'FIRST READ' for persons interested in Santa Fe and the Westward Movement. Another of a variety of fascinating histories of the Southwest.

Compass American Guides : New Mexico

I used this book and loved itMy husband and I were traveling by motorhome through the Southwest this winter. I bought this guide and it made our trip to New Mexico so much more meaningful. It provides exactly the kind of cultural and historical context I like to have in a very user friendly format. I have used other guides including Insight, Smithsonian, Mobil, etc. If the others in the series are as well done, this will be my guide of choice. It also has beautiful photos and helpful maps.
There's a much newer edition!Hey amazon! There's a new edition of this book (actually there have been 2.....) The newest comes out in February, with completely updated info and pictures. You should order it!

The Complete Idiot's Travel Guide to Mexico's Beach Resorts
Published in Paperback by Alpha Books (21 September, 1998)
Average review score:

Terrific!!!!!Very nice book about Mexico and it's cities. Explained where to go and not to go. We took it with us site seeing!!! A+++++
Very excellent book!Very good book if you don't know which beach resort to go to in Mexico. We knew we were going to Ixtapa but had never been to Mexico before. This book had the most comprehensive information on Ixtapa compared to others I looked at on the shelf. Written very lighthearted, honest and to the point. Good general information in the first couple of chapters about traveling into Mexico and what to expect (money, food, customs, culture, etc.). I found that the information was very acurate in its referrals in all areas (restaurants, lodging, places to go, night spots). I will keep this book to help me make a decision on which place to visit in Mexico next trip!

Copper Canyon Mexico

The Best of Mexico's Copper CanyonFabulous book--great color pictures! A must for every travel library. I am ordering a second book, so I can lend it out to friends!
This books captures the people of the Copper Canyon.Whether you plan to take a trip to Mexico's Copper Canyon or not, this book is a wonderful journey into that region. It provides both a fascinating look at the Tarahumara Indians as well as travel tips for the adventurous traveler.
Padre Luis Verplancken, S.J., the co-author of the books, has lived in the Copper Canyon region for more than 20 years. He provides an intimate portrait of the Tarahumara, both in words and pictures. Through Padre Verplancken, we learn about the Tarahumara people, religion, and social structures.
Mr. Fisher has compiled additional information on some of the other interesting places in the region. No trip to the Copper Canyon is complete, for example, without a visit to Batopilas. Or take a trip on the the Chihuahua El Pacifico railroad.
So whether you are an armchair traveller or a hearty hiker, this book is a must.

Corn Grows Ripe
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)

You Can Accomplish AnythingI am a fourth grade teacher who recently read this book with my reading class. I chose it because it showed that an ordinary child was faced with a seemingly impossible challenge that he overcame with perseverance. Throughout the story, the children watched Tigre slowly take on more and more responsibilty and become successful at his tasks. Although some of the voacbulary was above them, they enjoyed watching the boy mature.
Excellent book for use in classroom teaching of Ancient MayaI teach sixth grade and use The Corn Grows Ripe in my classroom. I teach a unit on the Ancient Mayans. This book is a great teaching tool. Not only do the students learn about the customs and family life of the Ancient Maya, but they also learn some of the Spanish language as well. We create a Spanish dictionary while reading the book. Good easy-read for all levels of readers in your classroom.

Corrido
Published in Paperback by Fleabites Press (April, 1998)
Average review score:

A book with a hook, that you have to finish. This is a little gem of a first novel, full of gritty characters, funny-sad situations, and a look at the kind of destiny that walks up and grabs you by the throat even though you've seen it coming. Tough and sensitive, never resting, always moving and taking you along with it. After this book, fleabites press can change its name to beestings.
Tough and exquisite at the same time!I picked up this book because of the title. Who is this writer? What a gift! Tough and exquisite at the same time. As unexpected as rain in the place she writes.
The book is neither strident nor moralizing in tone. Instead, a sense of quiet grief pervades. The photographs speak for themselves, as do the observations so eloquently captured in the accompanying quotations. In the end, the questions raised are unspoken but obvious: Who are we to decide the fate of an organism so alive and so vital as a river? What have we lost in our relentless quest for the "good life?" And can it in fact be a "good life" with the waters of the Colorado stilled? Inskip respects her readers enough to let them judge for themselves.
Admirers of Eliot Porter's famous The Place No One Knew, now out of print, will find this to be an appropriate companion volume. Very highly recommended.
